What if you imagine having every household item such as your refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer, thermostat, or anything the like connected to the internet. What would be the benefits of this; maybe access these devices from a smart phone and get your chores done a bit easier? Some of the scenarios I can think of right of the top of my head would be:
- I forgot to turn the dishwasher on before leaving. Let me just start it from my phone.
- It’s hotter than I expected today, so before I get home from work I can just set the temperature at home accordingly from my phone.
- I need to go grocery shopping, however I can just order what I need off the phone or maybe my refrigerator will keep track of what items I need so I do not need to make a grocery list myself.
These are just a few simple ideas of how it could be nice, however, we must realize that ANYTHING connected to the internet sends and receives information and all of that is able to be monitored and even intercepted. Wireless internet is even less secure since there is a lot less physical material involved and everything is transmitted through the air.
As the video above discusses this would prevent the need of having a search warrant for a household. A lot can be determined from such devices such as food for one example; majority of items can be found in the frig as “clean” or “kosher” the household can be quickly identified as Jewish. Another example is majority of food items are found to be organic and/or non-GMO labeled or most food does not have a bar code and appears home-grown; it is quickly gathered they either have a garden, farm etc., shop from people who grow food, or avoiding GMO foods. Lastly, it could probably be also estimated on how many people live in the house hold and compared to a government census.
Temperature that typically stops bacterial growth is below 40 F (5 C) and above 140 F (63 C) and more than likely for a home would be set at the colder temperature than the hotter temperature. Therefore if one needed to check on if there was something biological the temperatures could then be compared for the various situations.
I could go one more with examples and such but the idea would be clear for the bad possibilities but just remember there is already an app from ADT which from their quote can be understood, “Complete control of your home, even on the go.”
Last question. Why target the ability to control with a smart phone? Count the number of people you know has one versus the ones who don’t. You will probably have a harder time counting people who do not have a smart phone than those who do have one. I will not even go to the scenarios of cons related towards smart phones. Just keep an eye on three big corporations Google (Android, Motorola), Microsoft, and Apple of their developments and productions into the customer market.
